Something similar used to happen to me with a lesser version of Sendmail.
Occasionally some messages would have some null character in them, and the
SMTP gateway on the other side chocked on it, so the connection would
hang. Had to get permission from the users to look into their mail. AFAIK
they still have that happen to them occasionally. I think it was some
specific version of some Windoze mail client that did it.
